LOWA and American Hiking Society Bring Outdoor Awareness to Kids

Coloring makes all kids into artists, so why not use it as a way to encourage their awareness of the great outdoors at the same time? LOWA and the American Hiking Society agree and have teamed up for the third year in a row to make it happen.

Last year over 2000 kids downloaded outdoor-themed coloring pages from the LOWA and American Hiker Magazine websites.  They then entered their colorings in a contest, earning the chance to win a pair of LOWA boots.  The 2014 contest will be announced in each of four annual issues of the magazine, the first one a kick-off to American Hiker’s National Trail Days promotion always held the first Saturday in June.

Young artists up to age 12 can send their drawings to the American Hiking Society where four winners will be picked every quarter.  Each winner will be sent a pair of LOWA boots and other prizes and have their artwork featured on LOWA’s Facebook page and website.  “Hikers Rule” LOWA rulers reminding kids of American Hiking Society’s Ten Essentials of Hiking will be distributed at consumer shows and events and put in each box of kids boots shipped to LOWA retailers across the country.

“The American Hiking Society is one of the industry’s top non-profits that support hiking in America and they do a great job with limited resources,” commented Peter Sachs, general manager of LOWA in the U.S.  “Our sponsorship of the coloring contest is a fun way to reach our young customers and their parents and do our part in supporting this outstanding organization.”

LOWA offers a line of boots for active kids that parallels the look and quality of their adult counterparts.  The mid and lo-cut hikers offer comfortable support on trails, schoolyards and skate parks.  Each model utilizes high quality leathers combined with high-tech components such as GORE-TEX® waterproof and breathable lining, shock absorbing PU midsoles and durable rubber outsoles.

For the last three decades, the American Hiking Society has been protecting the nation’s trails and encouraging people to enjoy nature through the hiking experience. They work towards ensuring that hiking trails are preserved for generations to come. National Trails Day® is a celebration of trails that evolved from a 1987 report of President Ronald Reagan.

The report recommended that all Americans be able to go out their front doors and within fifteen minutes, be on trails that wind through their cities or towns and bring them back without retracing steps. In 1993, the recommendation became the impetus for the American Hiking Society’s launch of National Trails Day®.
